Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford began acting during her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she already had made her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of the company's season 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
